How does Australia measure English for visas?
The Department of Home Affairs uses named English levels, not one band score. The main ones for skilled migration are Competent, Proficient and Superior English. Each level needs a set score in each part of the test.

Why does a higher English level matter for skilled visas?
For points-tested skilled visas, a higher English level can add points or open more options. Competent English is usually the starting point; Proficient and Superior can add to your score. Many applicants find English the quickest place to gain points, compared with changing age, work experience or education.

Academic or General Training for Australia?
For visa purposes, Home Affairs accepts both IELTS Academic and General Training. Your choice may depend on other needs, such as a university place or a skills assessment body, which can ask for a specific test. Check the Home Affairs English language page and any assessing body you are dealing with.
What IELTS score do you need for an Australian student visa?
Two rules apply: your university's requirement and the student visa requirement. Universities set their own IELTS Academic scores, often with a minimum in each skill, and these differ by course. For the visa minimum, check the current rule on immi.homeaffairs.gov.au, as it has changed recently.
