IELTS Preparation: Guides, Tools and Coaching Options

To prepare for IELTS, first take a diagnostic test to find your band in each skill. Then learn the test format, practise each skill with a focus on your weakest one, and get Writing and Speaking marked. Finish with full timed mock tests, and book the exam when your mock scores reach your target.

Bands 0–9 for each skill, plus an overall band

How do you prepare for IELTS, step by step?

Follow six steps in order. Each one makes the next more efficient.

  1. Diagnose your level. Take a full practice test under time. Note a band for each skill, not only the overall. The band calculator shows how the four combine.
  2. Learn the test format. Know every question type, the timings, and the Writing and Speaking criteria. Start with how IELTS is scored, and check whether you need Academic or General Training.
  3. Practise each skill with a target. Put most time into your weakest skill. Listening and Reading: review every wrong answer. Writing: write both tasks under 60 minutes. Speaking: practise all three parts aloud.
  4. Get feedback. Have your Writing and Speaking marked against the official criteria and keep an error log. See writing feedback and speaking practice.
  5. Take full mock tests. Sit complete timed mocks to build stamina and check that your scores hold under pressure.
  6. Exam week. Stop learning new material. Do light timed practice, confirm your test-day documents and venue or online setup, and sleep well.

How long does IELTS preparation take?

There is no official duration. It depends on your starting band in each skill, your target, the hours you can study, and how much feedback you get. A diagnostic test is the most reliable way to estimate your own timeline.

Frequently asked questions

What is the first step in IELTS preparation?
Take a full timed practice test to find your band in each skill. It tells you where to spend your study time.
Can I prepare for IELTS on my own?
Yes, especially for Listening and Reading. Writing and Speaking are harder to judge alone, so many learners get those marked by a trainer.
What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?
Listening and Speaking are the same. Reading and Writing differ: Academic is for study and some professional registration; General Training is used for many migration routes, including Canada PR.
How many mock tests should I take before IELTS?
There is no fixed number. Take full timed mocks until your scores reach your target consistently.
Are there free ways to prepare with PrepEve?
Yes. There is a free 60-minute live webinar on Saturdays and Sundays at 7:00 PM IST, a free demo class with a level assessment, and a free band calculator.
