Is TOEFL or Duolingo Accepted for Canada PR?
No. For Express Entry, IRCC accepts three English tests: IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core. For French it accepts TEF Canada and TCF Canada. TOEFL and the Duolingo English Test are not on the list, so they cannot be used for Canada PR language points.
| Test | Accepted for Express Entry? | Mainly used for |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS General Training | Yes | Canada PR, Australia and other migration |
| CELPIP-General | Yes | Canada PR and citizenship |
| PTE Core | Yes | Canada PR |
| TEF Canada / TCF Canada | Yes (French) | Canada PR, French bonus points |
| IELTS Academic | No | University admission |
| PTE Academic | No | University admission, Australian visas |
| TOEFL iBT | No | University admission |
| Duolingo English Test | No | University admission |
I already have a TOEFL or Duolingo score. What now?
You will need one of the accepted tests for your Express Entry profile. Your TOEFL or Duolingo result is still a useful guide to your level. If you are used to computer-based tests, PTE Core or CELPIP may feel familiar; if you prefer speaking to a person, IELTS General Training has a face-to-face Speaking test.
Studying in Canada first?
Colleges and universities set their own English requirements, and many accept TOEFL or the Duolingo English Test for admission. When you later apply for PR, you will need an IRCC-approved test such as IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core.
Which accepted test should I take?
- CELPIP vs IELTS: Canadian English and a computer format, or face-to-face Speaking.
- PTE Core vs IELTS General: fully computer-scored with fast results.
- French (TEF or TCF): adds up to 50 bonus CRS points at NCLC 7.
