PTE Core vs IELTS General Training for Canada PR
According to IRCC, both PTE Core and IELTS General Training are approved English tests for Express Entry. Both convert to CLB levels, and results must be less than 2 years old. The main difference is format: PTE Core is computer-based and scored automatically, while IELTS has a human speaking examiner. Choose the format you score higher in.

Are PTE Core and IELTS General both accepted for Canada PR?
Yes. According to IRCC, the approved English tests for Express Entry are IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core.
Be careful with the version. PTE Academic and IELTS Academic are different tests and are not accepted for Express Entry. Many people lose time and a test fee by booking the wrong one.
IRCC treats the approved tests the same way: your scores are converted to CLB levels in each skill, and those CLB levels are what count for eligibility and CRS points. What are the differences between PTE Core and IELTS General?
The documented differences are about how you take the test and how it is marked, not how much IRCC values it.

How do PTE Core and IELTS General scores convert to CLB?
IRCC converts each skill score into a CLB level using its official equivalency charts. You need to check your own score in each skill, not just the overall.

IRCC publishes a separate PTE Core table in the same language test equivalency charts. We don't copy those numbers here, because PTE Core is newer to Express Entry and the table is best read at the source. Look up your target CLB in each skill before you set a score goal.

Take a timed practice test of each. Choose the one where you score higher in your weakest skill.
Choose PTE Core if…
- You are comfortable typing and working fully on a computer.
- You speak fluently at a steady pace but get nervous in front of an examiner.
- You want results quickly to meet a profile or application deadline.
- You are happy to learn how short, integrated task types are scored.
Choose IELTS General if…
- You prefer a real conversation with a human examiner for Speaking.
- You want the choice of paper or computer.
- You already know the IELTS format, or have an earlier IELTS score to build on.
- Your Writing is strong in letters and essays rather than short timed tasks.
Whichever you choose, plan your test date so the result is still under 2 years old when you submit your application.
