Language Tests for Study Abroad and PR: IELTS, PTE, CELPIP, TOEFL, TEF and TCF
Pick the test your goal accepts. For Canada PR, use IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, and add TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French. For Australia, IELTS and PTE Academic are common. UK visas need a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI. Universities often take IELTS Academic, TOEFL or PTE.

Which language test fits your goal?
Start with what you need the score for, not with the test you have heard of. Each government, university and regulator publishes its own list of accepted tests. The table shows the tests commonly used for each goal and where to start reading.

Two rules apply to almost every goal. First, the exact version of the test matters: IELTS General Training is not IELTS Academic, and PTE Core is not PTE Academic. Second, results expire. For Canada PR, IRCC only accepts results less than 2 years old. Check the rule for your own goal on the official page before you book.
