TOEFL Score Chart: 1–6, 0–120 and IELTS Compared
Since 21 January 2026, TOEFL iBT scores run from 1 to 6 in half points. ETS compares a 6 with 114 or more on the old 0–120 scale and with IELTS 8.0 to 9.0, a 5 with 95 or more and IELTS 7.0, and a 4 with 72 or more and IELTS 6.0. For tests taken before the change, ETS’s older table compares 94–101 out of 120 with IELTS 7.0.

Each section is scored from 1 to 6 as well, and the overall score is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half point. ETS’s guide has separate tables for each section.

Some ETS regional pages use slightly different cut-offs, and ETS says scores on different tests are not fully interchangeable. Use the requirement your university gives rather than a conversion.
What is a good TOEFL score?
It depends on the university and programme. On the new scale, 5 is C1 and 4 is B2 on the CEFR. If a university used to ask for 90 out of 120, the closest new score is 4.5, which ETS compares with 86 or more, but check whether the university has published its own new requirement.

Each column comes from a different study by a different test owner, so treat these as rough guides. Universities set their own minimums for each test.
Section scores
Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking each get a score from 1 to 6. On the old scale, each section was scored from 0 to 30. Some universities set minimum section scores as well as an overall score, so check both.
Converting an old score to the new scale
Using ETS’s comparison: 114 or more is about 6; 107 or more about 5.5; 95 or more about 5; 86 or more about 4.5; 72 or more about 4; and 58 or more about 3.5. Until January 2028, new score reports also show a comparable 0–120 score.
Is TOEFL accepted for Canada PR?
No. IRCC does not accept TOEFL for Express Entry. For Canada PR in English you need IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core.
How long are TOEFL scores valid?
Two years from the test date, on either scale.
