TCF Canada: Format, Scoring and How to Prepare
TCF Canada is a French test run by France Éducation international, a body linked to France's Ministry of Education. You take four tests: listening, reading, writing and speaking. IRCC accepts it for Express Entry and converts each score to an NCLC level. Results must be less than 2 years old.

What is TCF Canada?
TCF Canada (Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada) is the Canada version of the TCF, a French test from France Éducation international. That organisation works with France's Ministry of Education and also manages the DELF and DALF diplomas.

What is the TCF Canada format?
TCF Canada has four compulsory tests, and each gets its own score.
- Compréhension orale (listening): multiple-choice questions on recordings. They start simple and get harder as the test goes on.
- Compréhension écrite (reading): multiple-choice questions on texts, also rising in difficulty.
- Expression écrite (writing): a set of writing tasks that move from a short practical message to a longer text where you compare or argue.
- Expression orale (speaking): a recorded interview with an examiner, moving from a guided conversation to an exchange and then to giving your opinion.
Because listening and reading questions grow harder, strong candidates must stay focused to the end. Check the current format and timings on the official TCF Canada page before you book.
How is TCF Canada scored, and how does it relate to NCLC?
Each of the four tests is scored on its own. IRCC then converts every score to an NCLC level using its official chart.
Listening and reading are machine-marked multiple choice. Writing and speaking are marked by trained examiners against set criteria, such as task completion, coherence, vocabulary and grammar.
For the additional French CRS points, you need NCLC 7 or higher in all four skills. The conversion chart can change, so use IRCC's official page instead of copies online. See what each NCLC level means for plain-English descriptions.
How long are TCF Canada results valid?
For Express Entry, the result must be less than 2 years old when you create your profile and when you apply. Plan your test date so it does not expire mid-process.
How do you prepare for TCF Canada?
Build solid general French first, then practise the TCF's rising-difficulty format and its writing and speaking tasks.
- Check your level per skill. Plan around your weakest one.
- Train for harder items. Practise with advanced listening and reading, so the final questions do not stop you.
- Write to word limits. The writing tasks reward clear, well-organised text of the right length. Practise counting.
- Practise giving opinions aloud. The last speaking task asks you to defend a view. Record yourself and get feedback.
- Take timed practice tests. Learn the pace before test day.

- Running out of focus. The hardest multiple-choice questions come last.
- Ignoring word limits. Too short or too long can cost marks in writing.
