UK English Language Requirements: Which Test Do You Need?
It depends on why you need it. For UK visa routes that require an English test, UK Visas and Immigration accepts only a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider; IELTS for UKVI is one. For university admission, each university sets its own rules and may accept standard IELTS Academic, TOEFL or PTE.

Do I need a test for a visa or for a university?
These are two separate checks. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) checks English for the visa. The university checks English for admission. You may need to satisfy both, and they can accept different tests.

What is a SELT, and is IELTS one?
A Secure English Language Test (SELT) is an English test taken at an approved centre under UKVI security rules. According to UK Visas and Immigration, visa routes that need an English test require a SELT from an approved provider.
IELTS for UKVI is one SELT. It has the same content as standard IELTS, but is taken under the UKVI-approved conditions. Standard IELTS is not automatically accepted for a visa. The full list of approved SELT providers is on the gov.uk SELT page.
Some people don't need to take a test at all, for example because of nationality or a degree taught in English. The rules depend on the route, so check gov.uk for yours.
What English level does my UK visa need?
Each visa route sets a minimum level on the CEFR scale, and some levels changed in 2026. We don't list them here because they differ by route and can change.
Find your route on gov.uk (for example the Student visa page), read its English requirement, then check which SELT score meets it. Aim for the level in every skill the route tests.
Which English tests do UK universities accept?
Each university decides. Many accept standard IELTS Academic, TOEFL and PTE Academic, and often ask for a minimum in each skill as well as overall. Requirements can differ by course.
Some universities may ask for an IELTS for UKVI result when you need a visa, others accept a non-SELT test because they assess your English themselves. Always read the course page before you book.
Which test should I take for the UK?
- Choose IELTS for UKVI if your visa route requires a SELT, or you want one result that works for both the visa and most universities.
- Choose standard IELTS Academic if you only need it for admission and your university accepts it.
