PTE vs IELTS: Which English Test Should You Take?

There is no universal winner. PTE is fully computer-based and scored automatically, with results typically within a few days. IELTS is marked by trained examiners and has a face-to-face speaking test. First check which test your university or visa accepts, then pick the format you perform best in.

What are the main differences between PTE and IELTS?

The biggest differences are how you take the test, who scores it and how the scores are reported.

Acceptance varies by country and institution. Some accept both, some only one, and some ask for a specific version. Always check your target's official page before you book.

Should you choose PTE or IELTS?

Choose the test your target accepts first. If both are accepted, choose the format that plays to your strengths.

Choose PTE if…

• You are comfortable typing and working on a computer under time pressure.
• You speak fluently and clearly, and a microphone does not make you nervous.
• You want results quickly.
• You like short, structured tasks that reward a repeatable method.

Choose IELTS if…

• You prefer speaking to a real person rather than a screen.
• You write well in longer, developed answers.
• You want the choice of paper or computer.
• Your target names IELTS, or names IELTS General Training for Canada.

Still unsure? Take one timed sample of each. The format where you lose fewer marks is usually the right one.

What does each test reward?

PTE rewards consistency and technique. IELTS rewards developed answers judged by a person.

• In PTE, many short tasks are scored automatically, and several are integrated, so one answer can affect two skills. Smooth fluency, clear pronunciation, exact word limits and accurate spelling carry a lot of weight.
• In IELTS, examiners judge Writing and Speaking against published criteria such as coherence, vocabulary and grammar. Longer, well-organised answers and natural conversation matter more than speed.

So a fluent speaker who makes small grammar slips may find PTE kinder, while a careful writer who freezes in front of a microphone may do better in IELTS.

Which test for Australia and Canada?

Australia: according to the Department of Home Affairs, IELTS and PTE Academic are among the accepted English tests. Each visa sets its own required level, so check Home Affairs for yours. See English tests for Australian skilled visas.

Canada: according to IRCC, the approved English tests for Express Entry are IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core. IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are not the versions IRCC lists. Results convert to CLB levels. See Canada PR language requirements.
