CELPIP vs IELTS for Canada PR: Which Test Is Easier for You?
Neither test is easier for everyone. According to IRCC, CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training are both approved for Express Entry. CELPIP is fully on computer, uses Canadian English and maps directly to CLB levels. IELTS General Training has a face-to-face speaking test and converts to CLB through a table. Choose the format you perform best in.

How do CELPIP and IELTS scores map to CLB?
CELPIP maps one-to-one: each CELPIP skill level equals the same CLB level. IELTS General Training uses a per-skill table.

IRCC can update these levels, so check the current language test equivalency chart on canada.ca before you apply.
Notice that for IELTS the band needed differs by skill — Listening usually needs a higher band than Reading for the same CLB. With CELPIP you read the CLB straight from your score. Try your IELTS scores in the IELTS band calculator.
Where can you take CELPIP and IELTS?
IELTS is offered widely around the world. CELPIP is Canada-focused and is also offered in some other countries. Check the current test locations on celpip.ca before you plan around CELPIP — especially if you are outside Canada.
What mistakes do people make when choosing?
- Taking IELTS Academic for Express Entry. IRCC lists IELTS General Training, not Academic.
- Looking at the overall score. CLB is judged per skill, so your weakest skill decides the result.
- Switching tests without a reason. If you have prepared for one format, switching late means learning new task types. Take a timed sample first.
- Booking before checking validity. Results must be less than 2 years old when you use them, so plan the test date around your application.
Should you choose CELPIP or IELTS?
Both count the same way for Express Entry, so choose the test where you expect your weakest skill to score higher.
Choose CELPIP if…
- You are comfortable with North American accents and Canadian everyday topics.
- You are fine speaking to a computer and typing your writing.
- You want to read your CLB level directly from your score.
- A test centre is available where you live.
Choose IELTS General Training if…
- You speak better with a real person in front of you.
- You want a paper option or many test dates and locations.
- You may also need a test for other countries.
- You have already prepared for IELTS and know the format.
