PTE to IELTS Score Converter

Enter a PTE Academic overall score to see the matching IELTS band, or choose an IELTS band to see the PTE range. The converter uses Pearson’s July 2025 comparison: PTE 63 to 70 matches IELTS 7.0, 79 to 85 matches IELTS 8.0, and 90 matches IELTS 9.0. Universities and immigration departments set their own minimums, so always check the score they ask for.

PTE to IELTS score chart (Pearson, July 2025)

This is Pearson’s updated comparison from July 2025, which replaced its 2020 table. Older charts online show different numbers, so check the date of any chart you use.

Examples

• PTE 58: falls in the 55 to 62 range, which Pearson matches with IELTS 6.5.
• PTE 70: the top of the 63 to 70 range, so it still matches IELTS 7.0. One more point, 71, moves you into the IELTS 7.5 range.
• Aiming for IELTS 7.5: the matching PTE range is 71 to 78, so a target of 71 or above is the overall score to aim for.
• IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5: the overall match is PTE 47 to 54, but a university that sets skill minimums will also publish a PTE minimum for each skill.

PTE scores each skill and the overall result from 10 to 90, while IELTS uses bands from 0 to 9 in half-band steps. That is why one IELTS band covers a range of several PTE scores.

How to use your result

• Universities: most list their own PTE requirement next to their IELTS one. Use the PTE score they publish rather than a conversion.
• If only IELTS is listed: ask the admissions office whether they accept PTE and what score they want.
• Skill minimums: if a course asks for, say, IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, it will set a PTE minimum for each skill too.

Skill scores do not line up exactly

Pearson also publishes separate comparison tables for each skill, and they do not match the overall table. For example, IELTS 6.0 corresponds to PTE 54 to 65 in Speaking but 51 to 59 in Writing. If your university sets a minimum for each skill, compare skill by skill, not just the overall score.

Canada PR uses PTE Core, not this chart

For Express Entry, IRCC accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic, and it converts PTE Core scores to CLB levels with its own chart. You do not convert to IELTS first.

Australia sets its own PTE minimums

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs publishes its own PTE Academic minimum for each skill for its English levels, such as Competent, Proficient and Superior English. For visa points, use the Home Affairs table, not a PTE to IELTS conversion.

PTE or IELTS: which should you take?

• Cost: in 2026, PTE costs ₹18,900 and IELTS ₹19,000 in India, so the fee is almost the same.
• Speed: PTE results usually come within 48 hours.
• Format: PTE is fully on computer and scored by computer. In IELTS, Speaking is a conversation with an examiner.
• Acceptance: check that your university or visa accepts the test before you book.
