The Duolingo English Test costs US$70, paid online, and you take it at home in about an hour. Results come within 2 days and stay valid for 2 years. Scores run from 10 to 160. In Duolingo’s official comparison, 120 or 125 matches IELTS 6.5, 130 or 135 matches IELTS 7.0, and 150 or 155 matches IELTS 8.0.

Duolingo English Test fee in 2026

Duolingo’s own guide, updated in February 2026, gives the price as US$70 per test. You pay online by card, and your bank converts the amount to rupees. Older pages show US$49 or US$59, which were earlier prices. Check the price on Duolingo’s site when you buy. Duolingo’s Access Program offers fee waivers to eligible students.

How the Duolingo score works

You get an overall score from 10 to 160, in steps of 5. You also get four individual subscores, for Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, and four integrated subscores, Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production, each the average of two individual ones. The test is adaptive: questions get harder or easier depending on your answers.

Duolingo to IELTS score chart

This is Duolingo’s official comparison, published in 2022 and unchanged since. Duolingo says it shows the most likely IELTS score, not an exact equivalent, and is less reliable at the very top and bottom of the range. Duolingo also publishes separate comparisons for each skill.

Duolingo scores and the CEFR

Duolingo places scores of 100 to 125 at B2 and 130 to 150 at C1. Many universities state their requirement as a Duolingo score, so check the exact number they ask for.

What is a good Duolingo score?

It depends on the university and the course. Use the score each university publishes for the Duolingo English Test, not a conversion. As a rough guide from Duolingo’s chart, 120 to 125 is about IELTS 6.5 and 130 to 135 about IELTS 7.0.

Test rules at home

You take the test alone in a quiet, well-lit room, on a computer with a working camera, microphone and speakers. Headphones are not allowed, and your face and ears must stay visible. Read Duolingo’s requirements before test day, because breaking a rule can cancel your result.

Who accepts the Duolingo English Test?

• Universities: many accept it for admission, but not all, and some only for certain programmes. Check each university’s admissions page.
• Canada PR: not accepted. IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for Express Entry.
• Visas: check the immigration authority for your visa, because a university accepting it does not mean the visa does.

Duolingo or IELTS?

If every university on your list accepts Duolingo, it is the quicker and cheaper option. If you may also need a test for a visa or PR later, IELTS covers more uses.

How to prepare for the Duolingo English Test

• Take Duolingo’s free practice test to see the question types and your rough level.
• Practise speaking and writing to a timer, as answers are short and timed.
• Check your computer, camera, microphone and room meet the test’s rules before test day.
