PrepPTE Score Chart: PTE to IELTS, CLB and Australia
PTE is scored from 10 to 90. In Pearson’s July 2025 comparison, an overall PTE score of 79 to 85 matches IELTS 8.0, 63 to 70 matches IELTS 7.0, and 47 to 54 matches IELTS 6.0. For Canada PR, IRCC converts PTE Core scores to CLB levels, and for Australian visas, Home Affairs sets its own PTE minimum for each skill.

This is Pearson’s updated comparison from July 2025, which replaced its 2020 table, so older charts online show different numbers. Pearson also publishes separate tables for each skill, and Speaking and Writing line up less closely than the overall score. Universities and immigration departments set their own PTE requirements, so use the score they ask for rather than a conversion.
Skill by skill
Pearson’s skill tables do not line up exactly with the overall table. For example, IELTS 6.0 corresponds to PTE 54–65 in Speaking but 51–59 in Writing. If a university sets a minimum for each skill, compare skill by skill, not just the overall score.

IRCC accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic, for Express Entry. It converts each skill to a CLB level on its own, so your lowest skill can hold your CRS points down.

These minimums apply to PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Your lowest skill decides your level, and the points are for skilled visas that use the points test.
How PTE scoring works
You get an overall score and a score for Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing, all from 10 to 90. Many PTE tasks count towards two skills: Read Aloud counts for Speaking and Reading, for example, and Write from Dictation for Listening and Writing. Most scoring is automated, and since August 2025 the two new speaking tasks are also checked by a human expert. Pearson says the score report itself has not changed.
What is a good PTE score?
It depends on your goal. A university asking for IELTS 6.5 is roughly asking for PTE 55 to 62 overall, but always check its own PTE requirement. For Canada PR, CLB 9 in PTE Core gives far more CRS points than CLB 7. For Australia, Proficient and Superior English add 10 and 20 points. Aim a few points above your target in every skill, because one weak skill sets your level.
Why PTE charts online disagree
Pearson updated its comparison in July 2025, and Australia changed its PTE minimums for tests from 7 August 2025. Charts made before then show older numbers. Check the date on any chart you use.
