IELTS Eligibility: Age Limit, Qualification and Passport

Anyone can take IELTS. There is no minimum educational qualification and no upper age limit. IDP says the test is open to all ages but not recommended for people under 16. In India, the one firm requirement is a valid passport: it is the only ID accepted, it must still be valid after your test date, and you must bring the original on test day. There is no limit on how many times you can take IELTS.

Is there an age limit for IELTS?

There is no upper age limit. People take IELTS at every stage of life, from students applying to university to professionals and parents planning to migrate.

At the lower end, IDP’s terms say the test is open to all ages but is not recommended for people under 16. That is guidance rather than a ban, but IELTS is designed for adults applying to study, work or migrate, so most test takers are 17 or older.

Keep in mind that the organisation you apply to may have its own age rules. Immigration points systems, for example, often give fewer points as you get older. That affects your application, not your eligibility to sit IELTS.

What qualification do you need for IELTS?

None. IELTS tests your English, not your education, so you can take it whether you have finished school, a degree, a diploma or none of these.

Your education still matters for your application. Universities set their own academic entry requirements, and immigration programmes often give points for education. Check those separately from your IELTS score.

The passport rule in India

  • A valid passport is the only accepted ID for IELTS in India.
  • It must be valid after your test date. A passport that expires before or on your test day is not accepted, even if it was valid when you booked.
  • Bring the original on test day: the same passport you used to book. Without it you will be refused entry.
  • Your details must match. Enter your name and passport number exactly as on your passport when you book.

If your passport is close to expiry, renew it before you book, and book with the new one.

How many times can you take IELTS?

There is no limit on how many times you can take IELTS, and IDP says there is no fixed waiting period between attempts. In practice, rebooking without changing how you prepare usually gives a similar score, so use the time between attempts to fix what held you back.

If only one section fell short, IELTS One Skill Retake lets you retake just that section. It is available for IELTS on computer, within 60 days of your original test, once per test.
