How Long Does It Take to Prepare for IELTS?
Most people with comfortable English need 3–8 weeks to reach 6.5–7. Raising your score by a full band usually takes 2–4 months. The biggest factor is not hours but whether your mistakes are corrected.
Typical preparation time
| Where you are now | Target | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Comfortable English, new to the test format | 6.5–7 | 3–6 weeks |
| Scored 6.0–6.5 before | +0.5 band | 4–8 weeks |
| Scored 6.0–6.5 before | +1 band | 2–4 months |
| Need 8777 (CLB 9) for Canada PR | L 8, R/W/S 7 | 1–3 months, depending on the gap |
| Basic English | 6+ | 4–6 months or more |
These are typical ranges, not promises. They vary with your starting level, daily time and, most of all, whether someone corrects your mistakes.
What changes your timeline
- Which skill is weak. Listening and Reading improve fastest with practice. Writing and Speaking need feedback, because you cannot see your own errors.
- Feedback. Practising without correction repeats the same mistakes. One marked essay is worth more than five unmarked ones.
- Consistency. 1 hour every day beats 7 hours on Sunday.
A sample 4-week plan
- Week 1: Take a full timed mock. Find your weakest skill and the 2–3 mistakes behind it.
- Week 2: Fix those mistakes: daily targeted practice, essays marked, speaking recorded.
- Week 3: Timed practice on all four skills, with feedback on Writing and Speaking.
- Week 4: Two full mocks, a final review of repeated errors, then book or sit the test.

Frequently asked questions
Can I prepare for IELTS in one month?
Often yes, if your English is already reasonable and you need 6.5–7. One month is tight for a jump of a full band, especially in Writing.
How many hours a day should I study for IELTS?
One to two focused hours a day is enough for most people, if the practice targets your weak skill and gets corrected.
How long does it take to go from 6.5 to 7?
Commonly 4–8 weeks of focused, corrected practice on the skill that is holding you back.
