How to Score 8 in IELTS Writing

To score 8 in IELTS Writing, fully answer every part of the question with well-developed, relevant and supported ideas. Organise paragraphs logically, use a wide range of vocabulary naturally with only rare slips, and make sure most of your sentences have no grammar errors. At this level, accuracy matters more than complexity.

What changes between Band 7 and Band 8?

  • Task Response: at 7 your ideas are clear but sometimes general. At 8 they are well developed, relevant, extended and supported.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: at 8 you sequence information logically and manage cohesion well, so linking feels natural rather than mechanical.
  • Lexical Resource: at 8 you use a wide range fluently and flexibly, with skilful use of less common words and only occasional slips.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: at 8 most sentences are error-free, with only very occasional errors or inappropriacies.

For the official wording, see the public band descriptors on ielts.org.

How to develop ideas at Band 8 level

Each body paragraph should follow a clear chain: main point → explanation → specific example → result or link back to the question. If a reader could ask "why?" or "for example?" after a sentence, the idea is not developed enough yet.

Two well-developed body paragraphs usually score higher than three or four thin ones.

How to reduce errors to Band 8 level

  1. Keep an error log from every marked essay. Most writers repeat the same five or six errors.
  2. Leave three minutes at the end to check only your known error types: articles, agreement, prepositions, punctuation.
  3. Use complex sentences you can control. A clear sentence beats a long sentence with a mistake.

Vocabulary for Band 8: precision, not rare words

Examiners reward words that fit exactly. "Significant" used correctly scores better than "quintessential" used in the wrong context. Learn collocations (which words go together) rather than single "advanced" words.

Task 1 at Band 8

Write a clear overview, select the most important features, and compare them accurately. In General Training, cover every bullet fully and keep the tone consistent. Task 1 is worth less, but a weak Task 1 can still pull an 8 down to 7.5.
