CLB 8 IELTS Score: What It Means for Canada PR
CLB 8 in IELTS General Training means at least 7.5 in Listening and 6.5 in Reading, Writing and Speaking. It is above the CLB 7 minimum for most Express Entry programs and gives a single applicant 92 CRS points for first-language ability. Moving from CLB 8 to CLB 9 adds 32 core points and can double your language-based skill transferability points.

What is CLB 8 in IELTS?
IRCC converts each IELTS General Training skill to a CLB level on its own. For CLB 8 you need at least:

Listening needs a full band more than the other skills. With 7.0 in Listening and 6.5 in the rest, you are CLB 7 in Listening and CLB 8 in the others. IELTS Academic is not accepted for Express Entry.

In the Federal Skilled Worker 67-point grid, CLB 8 gives 5 points per skill, against 4 at CLB 7 and 6 at CLB 9.
CLB 8 vs CLB 9: what you gain
Moving from CLB 8 to CLB 9 in all four skills adds 32 core points for a single applicant. It also raises your skill transferability points, which combine your language score with your education and foreign work experience: those points are 13 or 25 at CLB 7 and 8, and 25 or 50 at CLB 9.
Take a single applicant with a bachelor’s degree and three years of work experience outside Canada. At CLB 8 their skill transferability points are 38; at CLB 9 they are 75. With the 32 core points, CLB 9 adds 69 points in total.
Is CLB 8 enough for Canada PR?
CLB 8 is above the minimum for every Express Entry program: CLB 7 for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, CLB 7 or 5 for the Canadian Experience Class depending on your job, and CLB 5 or 4 for the Federal Skilled Trades Program. Whether it is enough to be invited depends on your total CRS score and the cut-offs of the rounds you qualify for.
Which skills make CLB 8 hard to reach?
Listening is the easiest to miss, because 7.5 needs about 32 correct answers out of 40 while the other skills need only 6.5. In General Training Reading, 6.5 needs about 32 or 33 correct answers. Writing and Speaking are marked by examiners against the band descriptors, so feedback on your own answers is what moves them.
