CLB 10 IELTS Score: Bands Needed and CRS Points
CLB 10 in IELTS General Training means at least 8.5 in Listening, 8.0 in Reading and 7.5 in Writing and Speaking. It is the top CLB level for CRS points: 34 points per skill for a single applicant, or 136 in total. That is only 12 points more than CLB 9, because skill transferability points already reach their maximum at CLB 9.

What IELTS score is CLB 10?
| CLB level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 | 8.5 | 8.0 | 7.5 | 7.5 |
| CLB 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
CLB 10 is the highest level IRCC counts, so a higher band, such as 9.0 in Listening, is still CLB 10. Each skill is converted on its own: you can be CLB 10 in some skills and CLB 9 in others.
CRS points: CLB 10 vs CLB 9
| CLB 9 | CLB 10 | Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single: per skill | 31 | 34 | +3 |
| Single: all four skills | 124 | 136 | +12 |
| With spouse: per skill | 29 | 32 | +3 |
| With spouse: all four skills | 116 | 128 | +12 |
Skill transferability points already reach their maximum at CLB 9, and the FSW grid gives 6 points per skill at CLB 9 too, so CLB 10 adds nothing there.
Is CLB 10 worth it?
If you are already at CLB 9 in every skill, CLB 10 in all four adds 12 points, and raising just one skill adds 3. Compare that with other options:
- French at NCLC 7 in all four skills adds a 50-point bonus (with English at CLB 5 or higher) and 12 second-language points.
- Your spouse’s language score can add up to 20 points.
- One year of Canadian work experience adds 40 points for a single applicant.
If you are a few points short of the cut-offs for the rounds you qualify for, the last 12 points can matter. If one skill is still below CLB 9, fix that first: CLB 9 brings the big jump in points.
Which skills are hardest for CLB 10?
Listening 8.5 needs about 37 correct answers out of 40, so you can miss only around three. General Training Reading 8.0 needs about 37 or 38 correct answers. In Writing and Speaking, 7.5 means meeting the band descriptors at a high level in every criterion, so feedback on your own answers matters.
When should you aim for CLB 10?
- You are at CLB 9 in all four skills and just short of recent cut-offs for your rounds.
- You already score 8.5 in Listening in practice tests, and only one or two skills are below CLB 10.
- Other options, such as French or a provincial nomination, are not open to you yet.
