Which IELTS do you need for Canada PR?
You need IELTS General Training for Express Entry. IRCC does not accept IELTS Academic for it. Booking the wrong test is a costly mistake, so check the test type before you pay.

How does IRCC convert IELTS to CLB?
IRCC converts each skill to a CLB level on its own. Your overall IELTS band is not used. You need at least the band shown in each skill to reach that CLB level.

Why does one skill matter so much for CRS?
Because CRS points for language are counted skill by skill. One weak skill can hold you a full CLB level below the others, and that costs points.
Example: Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5, Speaking 7.0 gives CLB 9, 9, 8, 9. Writing alone keeps you from CLB 9 in all four skills. For most Canada PR students, the fastest gain is fixing the one skill that sits below the rest — very often Writing.
How long are IELTS results valid for Canada?
For Express Entry, your results must be less than 2 years old on the day you apply. Plan your test date so that your score is still valid when you receive an invitation and submit.
What should IELTS coaching for Canada focus on?
General Training tasks, not Academic ones, and every skill aimed at a CLB target. General Training Writing Task 1 is a letter, not a graph. Reading uses everyday and workplace texts.
- Per-skill targets: set a band for each skill based on the CLB you need, not one overall number.
- Letter writing: formal, semi-formal and informal letters, with the right tone.
- Task 2 essays: marked by a trainer against the four criteria.
- Speaking: practice with a person in the real three-part format.
- Timed General Training mock tests: so Reading timing is not a surprise.
Can French help your CRS score?
Yes. Under IRCC rules, if you reach NCLC 7 in all four French skills, you can get up to 50 extra CRS points, depending on your English level. For many candidates with good English, French is the next lever. See French classes for Canada PR.

Should you take IELTS or CELPIP for Canada?
