IELTS Speaking Coaching: What Actually Improves Your Band
Your IELTS Speaking band improves when you practise the real three-part interview with a person and get feedback on the four criteria: fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Memorised answers rarely help. Regular timed mock interviews, with specific corrections after each one, usually help most.
- Length
- 11–14 minutes
- Format
- Face-to-face interview with a certified examiner, in 3 parts
- Part 1
- Questions about familiar topics (home, work, studies, interests)
- Part 2
- A long turn: you get a task card, 1 minute to prepare, then speak for up to 2 minutes
- Part 3
- A discussion of more abstract ideas linked to the Part 2 topic
- Marked on
- Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, Pronunciation — equal weight
What actually improves your IELTS Speaking band?
Speaking with a real listener, under test conditions, and getting corrected on specific errors. Knowing tips is not the same as being able to use them under pressure.
- Extending answers naturally. Give a reason or an example, instead of one-line replies.
- Handling Part 2 for the full time. Many learners run out of ideas early. A simple plan in the 1-minute preparation helps.
- Discussing ideas in Part 3. This part tests whether you can compare, speculate and give opinions.
- Fixing repeated errors. Most learners repeat a small number of grammar or pronunciation errors. Fix those first.
How is IELTS Speaking marked?
The examiner rates four criteria with equal weight. Your accent is not marked down; being hard to understand is.
- Fluency and Coherence — can you keep speaking without long pauses and link ideas clearly?
- Lexical Resource — can you talk about many topics, and paraphrase when you lack a word?
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy — a mix of simple and complex sentences, mostly correct.
- Pronunciation — clear sounds, word stress and intonation.
More detail is in our guide to IELTS scoring.
Should you memorise IELTS Speaking answers?
No. Examiners are trained to notice rehearsed answers, and memorised speech often doesn't fit the exact question. Prepare ideas and useful phrases for common topics, then practise saying them in your own words.
How should you practise IELTS Speaking?
Record yourself, practise with a partner, and take full mock interviews with feedback. Each method catches different problems.
| Method | Good for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Recording yourself | Hearing pauses, fillers and pronunciation | Hard to judge your own grammar and range |
| Speaking partner | Confidence and fluency | Partner may not know the criteria |
| Mock interview with a trainer | Real test pressure plus criteria-based feedback | Costs time and usually money |
A simple weekly routine: answer Part 1 questions daily for a few minutes, do two or three timed Part 2 talks, record one full test, and take a mock interview when you can.
How do you handle nerves in the Speaking test?
Familiarity reduces nerves. When you have done the three parts many times with a real person, the test feels like practice. It is fine to ask the examiner to repeat a question.
