Canada PR Age Limit: How Age Affects Your CRS Score

There is no maximum age for Canada PR. But age is worth up to 110 CRS points for a single applicant, and those points start falling at 30, drop faster after 40 and reach zero at 45. Older applicants usually make up the gap with higher language scores, French, Canadian work experience or a provincial nomination.

Is there an age limit for Canada PR?

No. IRCC does not set a maximum age for Express Entry or for permanent residence. Age only changes how many points you get: in the CRS, which ranks you in the Express Entry pool, and in the 67-point grid for the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

How many points do you lose after 30, 35 and 40?

For a single applicant, compared with the maximum of 110 points from 20 to 29:

  • At 30: 105 points, 5 fewer.
  • At 35: 77 points, 33 fewer.
  • At 40: 50 points, 60 fewer.
  • At 44: 6 points, 104 fewer. From 45, age gives no points.

Your profile updates as your age changes, so a birthday while you wait in the pool can lower your score. If a birthday is close, get your test results and ECA ready early.

Age points in the FSW 67-point grid

The Federal Skilled Worker grid gives 12 points from 18 to 35, then one point less each year, down to 1 at 46 and 0 from 47. Fewer age points make the 67-point pass mark harder to reach, so language and education matter more after 40.

How to make up lost age points

Ways to add CRS points (single applicant)
ChangeCRS points it can add
CLB 7 to CLB 9 in all four skills+56, plus up to 50 in skill transferability
French at NCLC 7 in all four skills, with English at CLB 5++50 bonus, plus 12 second-language points
A provincial nomination (enhanced stream)+600
1 year of Canadian work experience+40
Two or more credentials instead of one bachelor’s degree+8, plus higher skill transferability

Example: applying at 38

A single applicant aged 38, with a master’s degree and 3 or more years of work experience outside Canada:

  • With CLB 7 in every skill: 61 for age, 135 for education, 68 for language and 50 for skill transferability: 314.
  • With CLB 9 in every skill: language rises to 124 and skill transferability to 100: 420, which is 106 points more.
  • Adding French at NCLC 7: another 62 points, for 482.

The higher language score more than makes up for the 49 age points lost since 29. This is a worked example using IRCC’s published points, not a prediction of any cut-off.

Does age matter for provincial programs?

Each province sets its own rules. Some provincial streams score age in their own points systems and others do not, so check the stream you are interested in.

This guide is general information, not immigration advice. IRCC decides every application, and its rules can change.
