Proof of Funds for Canada PR (Express Entry)

Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades applicants must show they have enough money to settle in Canada. IRCC’s current table asks for CAD 15,263 for one person, CAD 19,001 for a family of two and CAD 28,362 for a family of four. Canadian Experience Class applicants, and anyone already authorised to work in Canada with a valid job offer, do not need to show funds.

Who counts in your family size?

Count yourself, your spouse or common-law partner, your dependent children, and your spouse’s or partner’s dependent children. Include them even if they are not coming to Canada with you, and even if they are already Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Who does not need proof of funds?

  • Canadian Experience Class applicants.
  • Anyone who is authorised to work in Canada and has a valid job offer, even under the Federal Skilled Worker or Federal Skilled Trades program.

What matters is the program you are invited under, which your invitation shows. If the Federal Skilled Worker or Federal Skilled Trades program is possible for you, keep your funds ready.

What counts as proof of funds?

  • Money in your bank accounts that you can use right away.
  • Money in a joint account with your spouse or partner.
  • You cannot borrow the money from another person.
  • Equity in property, such as a house or land, does not count.

If you plan to use fixed deposits, mutual funds or other investments, check IRCC’s current guidance first. The money must be available to you when you apply and until your application is decided.

How to show proof of funds from India

Get an official letter from each bank or financial institution where you hold money. IRCC asks for each letter to:

  • be printed on the bank’s letterhead;
  • include the bank’s address, phone number and email;
  • show your name;
  • list your outstanding debts, such as loans and credit card balances;
  • for each account, show the account number, the date it was opened, the current balance and the average balance for the past six months.

You upload the letters with your PR application after you are invited. In your profile, you only enter the amount.

Common proof of funds mistakes

  • A letter that shows only the current balance, without the six-month average.
  • Leaving out debts, or family members who are not coming with you.
  • A large deposit just before applying, with no explanation of where it came from.
  • Using borrowed money, or counting the value of property.
  • An amount in your profile that does not match your bank letters.

Do you need proof of funds with a provincial nomination?

A provincial nomination does not remove the federal rule. If you are invited under the Federal Skilled Worker or Federal Skilled Trades program, you still need to show the funds unless you are exempt. Provinces can also set their own funds rules for their streams.

This guide is general information, not immigration advice. IRCC decides every application, and its rules can change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use borrowed money as proof of funds?
No. IRCC does not accept money borrowed from another person.
